Bulk Liquids Storage Operations at a Prime U.S. Import/Export Facility on the Houston Ship Channel
Loading, unloading, and storing ammonia & NGLs in the heart of the U.S. Gulf Coast petrochemical corridor
What's in a Name?
Vopak Exolum Houston is the name of a joint venture partnership and its world-class bulk liquids terminal operating on the Houston Ship Channel. The name reflects its two owners — Netherlands-based Vopak and Spain’s Exolum — both long-time leaders in terminal, logistics, and pipeline operations. Together, they manage and operate 144 terminals across Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Far East.
The Vopak Exolum Houston Terminal
The VEH terminal is strategically located on the U.S. Gulf Coast with prime dockage in the Port of Houston, one of the world’s leading energy, refining, chemical and petrochemical hubs. The facility operations include loading/unloading ammonia at multiple berths for vessels and barges, possessing loading infrastructure that can accommodate Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). A rail loop onsite provides access by unit trains for ammonia and natural gas liquids.
Terminal History and Ownership
In 2011, Vopak North America, part of Royal Vopak, acquired the Deer Park site from Rohm & Haas. Five years later, Vopak formed a joint venture with Moda Midstream to develop a state-of-the-art marine terminal on the Houston Ship Channel, commissioned successfully in 2021.
Between 2019 and 2021, the Inland Rail Loop was expanded with the addition of four rail spurs and associated tanks, piping, and equipment — enhancing flexibility and creating added value for customers.
In 2023, Exolum, a global leader in sustainable bulk liquid logistics, acquired Moda Midstream’s 50% stake, and the venture became Vopak Exolum Houston LLC.
This partnership brings together two global logistics leaders, strengthening the Deer Park Terminal’s role in the evolving energy landscape.
